My subject is mortality.

I don't draw in order to make pictures. I draw in order to see. I want to really see the materiality of the world - what is. I want to have that direct experience, not an experience that is removed.

The problem is that once I have finished looking at (and drawing) an object, I necessarily have created something that is removed from its original reality. Without a particular intention to do so, I've created a new thing - the drawing - that is an object in itself, separate from the original object I was studying.

I acknowledge this on the page. I do so by seeing the drawing as its own object. I work with the materiality of this new object - often cutting into it, weaving it, tearing it, re-organizing shapes found within it, folding it, etc., to explore its particular reality. These elements of the drawings are often based on structures found in physics and mathematics.

My goal is to cross boundaries: marrying art and science; observation and concept; drawing and sculpture.
